A government survey is now estimating that autism affects one in every 50 children, making it more important than ever to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders. April marks Autism Awareness Month, and the Barber National Institute, children and families kicked it off early with a special Autism Awareness Day at the Millcreek Mall Saturday, March 23.

A call to always strive for the best was one of the messages brought by Fred Lokuta, deputy secretary of the Office of Developmental Programs, in his first visit to the Barber National Institute on Friday. The Erie Maennerchor Club recently presented a $10,000 donation to the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Foundation. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Public Welfare has formally approved Connections Camp for summer 2013 for children and young adolescents diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Development Disorder or High-Functioning Autism.
