Community Drumming Circle Spotlight
Erie, Pa. (July 6, 2026) Each Monday, we share stories that reflect our commitment to providing hope and opportunity to individuals and families across our communities. This post is written by Jacob Bennefield, a communications intern at Barber National Institute who is exploring how storytelling can connect people to our mission. #MissionMonday
This week I helped put at our community drumming circle. The drumming circle is where individuals get to come together and learn about music. Everyone gets set up in a circle each with a drum while our instructor, Jay, stands in the middle showing how to drum along to a beat. Jay uses beloved songs like “Yellow Submarine” and “We Will Rock You” to get everyone excited and active. Michael, one of the adults, specifically enjoys the song “Funkytown” and was very enthusiastic when it came on.
We also played different musical games like orchestra where individuals would take turns conducting, controlling the volume and speed everyone drummed. Individuals like Donnie would add extra flare and dance while drumming along. One individual, John, has been motivated to practice drumming in his own time, even wanting to get a full drum set.
Music is important as it keeps the brain engaged while having fun and unlocking a person’s creative side. Individuals of all abilities deserve the opportunity to create and learn about music; the drumming circle provides this.
