Beast Virtual 5K Returns

Registration for Barber Beast on the Block, a virtual 5K, opens today, March 1 at BarberBeast.org.  The event is designed to be completed anywhere, anytime from noon on Friday, May 21 to noon on Monday, May 24, 2021.

Both the Beast virtual 5K and the 10-mile obstacle course challenge scheduled for Sept. 11 will be held this year, providing opportunities for persons of varying interests and fitness levels.  “We started the virtual 5K last year when restrictions forced the cancellation of the 10-mile Beast course,” said Laura Schaaf, director of giving at the Barber National Institute.  “But the event was so well received that participants asked us to offer it again.  Many people are using it as a way to get their Beast team together in anticipation of the September event, or just as a fun fitness alternative.”

In its first year, the Beast on the Block drew more than 400 participants from 17 states and three countries who completed the event in neighborhoods, parks and other settings.  Participants can compete for awards, including fasted time posted for male and female competitors, most creative finish line, and best individual work out along the course.

All registered participants will receive a Beast on the Block t-shirt and collectible magnet, as well as their own participant bib to print and a virtual medal to use on social media.  The cost is $30 per person, with a 20% discount for groups of four or more.

“Our traditional fundraisers were canceled last year, and so support from the community becomes even more important as we continue providing essential services to our very vulnerable population,” said Schaaf.  “We have found that the virtual 5K can really be customized for the fitness levels of the participants and enable them to safely do the event alone or as a group where they are most comfortable.  It is really a great event for them and for our organization.”
