Enthusiastic Fans Welcome
Cleveland Caravan 2009

It may have been a blustery January evening, but more than 600 devoted baseball fans were thinking about spring at the 2009 Cleveland Indians Winter Caravan. The event was held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber National Institute.

The line up of visiting players included star outfielder Ben Francisco and pitcher Aaron Laffey, as well as hitting coach Derek Shelton and announcer Matt Underwood.

The Caravan began with a video of highlights from the 2008 season, followed by a question and answer session for the team. Fans asked about strategies and plans for the upcoming season, including whether Cy Young award winner Cliff Lee could repeat his outstanding pitching performance. The event concluded with an auction of team items including a game-worn jersey from Johnny Peralta, a game bat signed by Francisco, and a ticket package featuring seats in the media box at the ball park. Youngsters also had the opportunity to get autographs and photos with the team.

All proceeds benefit services for children and adults with disabilities at the Barber National Institute.
