Art Show April 16, 18, & 19 Celebrating the Possibilities

Artists Awarded At Annual Show 2009

All those who love art found much to enjoy at the Second Annual Community Art Show, "Celebrating the Possibilities", sponsored by the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber National Institute April 3, 5 & 6. The Show & Sale featured more than 200 works of art created by amateur and professional adult and child artists from throughout the region. Some of the well-known artists from the community included Mary Kay Geary, Robert and Ann Mazzone, Passle Helminski, Art Becker, James Sabol, Luke Gehring, Fran Schanz, and Victoria Norvaisa.

Awards were presented during an Artists Opening Reception on April 2. A panel of three judges, Roy Ahlgren, Karen Rene Merkle and Joyce Perowicz, selected winners for the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Award of Excellence in the categories of children/adolescents; adult amateur; and adult professional. In addition, the judges have designated several pieces for honorable mention.

In the adult professional category, William Murch received the "Award of Excellence" for his oil painting "Whitehall Parkway Trail." Honorable Mention recognition was given to Richard P. Sadlier for "Untitled" and to Justin Pool for "Augury."

The Award of Excellence in the category of adult amateurs was given to Erika Williams for her oil on canvas, "My First Love." Receiving honorable mention in this category were Rachel Levalot for "Night" and Vicki Szumigala for "Neon Night."

In the category for children/adolescents, twin sisters Augusta and Indigo Barron won the Award of Excellence for their abstract acrylic "Imagination Station." Honorable Mention awards were also presented to Casey Ireson for "What the Bowling Ball Sees;" to David Markiewicz for "Waterfalls," and to Gwynneth Grabowski for her sculpture, "Robot Study # 1."

Visitors to the show were also asked to vote for their favorite pieces of adult and student artwork for a People’s Choice Award. In the adult category, Eric Rhode was the favorite for his elaborate puzzle piece sculpture "Come Together," and Jenna Horton won in the children & adolescent category for "Jenna's Garden." Rhode used more than 10,280 puzzle pieces in his sculpture, which he generously donated to the Barber National Institute.
