Local amateur and professional artists were awarded on Thursday, April 14, for their creative achievements in the third annual Community Art Show, "Celebrating the Possibilities," sponsored by the Barber National Institute. This year, nearly 250 works created by 43 youth and 162 adult artists were exhibited in the Show, held Friday, April 16, 18 and 19.
Three judges from the local arts community—Paula Barrett, Kathleen DeAngelo, and S. Vincent Palermo—selected award winners in the categories of children/adolescents, adult amateur, and adult professional. The Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Award of Excellence as well as honorable mention awards were presented during a ceremony at the Artist’s reception.
In the adult professional category, the winner of the Best of Show Award was presented to Justin Eliott Poole for his oil on panel, "Heretic." This is Poole’s third consecutive award, having been named Best of Show in 2008 and Honorable Mention in 2009. Sue Hunter’s raku piece, "Many Moons" and Robert Harris’ "Tango," a welded steel sculpture, were this year’s Honorable Mention award winners.
In the adult amateur category, Kathleen Lutz was awarded Best of Show for her photograph, "Frozen Apples." Honorable Mention was given to Alfred Brown III for "Untitled," done in crayon, and "Walnut Creek," a watercolor painting done by Marty Mueller.
In the children/adolescent category, Helen Tullio, age 15, was awarded Best of Show for her acrylic piece, "Bernwood Farm." The Honorable Mention awards were given to Brandi North, age 13, for her mixed media piece, "Canoeing on the Lake" and Logan Burrows, age 13, for his paper/foamboard work, "Matisse Collage."
The show also included an exhibit of artwork created in Fall, 2009 through the Artist-In-Residence program with students in the Elizabeth Lee Black School and artist Clarabelle Van Niekerk. The project included the creation of 20 animal posters and ten paper mache puppets adorned with jewels, glitter and swaths of cloth. The Artist In Residence was made possible in part through funds provided by ArtsErie’s Arts in Education Partnership.
The Fourth Annual Community Art Show will be held at the Barber National Institute in April, 2011.
