Teaching the Arts to Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Art Workshop

Tuesday, June 18, 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Barber National Institute

Presenters include Cynthia Priester and Ann Ellison of the Barber National Institute, Rand Whipple of Box Of Light Studios - Erie and ArtsErie, and Siobhan Peterson-Walsh of ArtsErie.

Each workshop will include:

  • An overview of characteristics of Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other pervasive Developmental Disabilities
  • Strategies for using Universal Design for learning to allow greater access to the curriculum for children with ASD
  • Strategies for behavior management
  • Best practices in assessment

The cost is $25 and includes breakfast and lunch. Registration is limited to the first 30 paid participants by June 11. Act 48 credit is available.

This workshop is sponsored by VSA Pennsylvania, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, ArtsErie Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Barber National Institute.

Shillelagh Golf Tournament

Join us on Thursday, June 20th for our Annual Shillelagh Golf Tournament at the Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs. Shotgun Start is scheduled for 12:30pm followed by our Awards Dinner at 5:30pm. For more information please contact mkuser@barberinstitute.org.

 

Barber Beast on the Bay

Barber Beast on the Bay is a new extreme obstacle course challenge that will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 at Presque Isle State Park. Course options are offered for 4, 6, 8 and 12 mile routes with obstacles designed by a former U.S. Navy SEAL. In addition, the Maureen Riazzi Adapted Course will be offered for adults with disabilities.  Proceeds benefit the Barber National Institute to help make dreams come true for children and adults with autism and other disabilities.  Free or reduced registration for participants who raise funds for our mission. 2013 Art Show

BNI 2013 Artshow Three judges from the local arts community reviewed the more than 400 pieces of artwork featured in this year’s show that included sculptures, paintings and mixed media. Awards were presented in the categories of professional adult artist, amateur adult artist, and youth. New this year was a separate awards category for photography.
