Speakers:
Ms. Wall-Cote was Pennsylvania’s first Autism Affairs Director. Formerly a behavioral specialist serving children with autism spectrum disorder, she chaired the state Autism Task Force in 2003, which developed recommendations to improve the organization, financing and delivery of autism services in Pennsylvania. In her current role, she is responsible for implementing the recommendations and serving as the point person for all issues affecting those with autism.

This presentation is open to the community and presented free of charge. Free babysitting services provided by Family Support Services with advance reservation.

The Faces of Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Encore Presentation

The presentation has been underwritten by a DPW grant for an “Innovative Model for Bringing Autism Expertise and Services to Rural Areas of Pennsylvania.”

3. Successful intervention strategies
4. Goals for inclusion in a child’s IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individual Education Plan)

Speakers:
Joseph C. Barber, M.D.

Dr. Joseph Barber is a licensed practicing pediatrician/child neurologist at Erie Pediatrics, which is affiliated with the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Barber has served as director and coordinator of various programs, including the Down syndrome program at the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber National Institute. He has given numerous presentations in the Erie region on topics dealing with acute and chronic neurological problems seen in children and the assessment and intervention methodology for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. His personal interest area concerns children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. An Erie native, Dr. Barber attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to complete residency training at the University of Virginia and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed fellowship training in Child Neurology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Child Neurology Society.

Dr. Barber originally gave this presentation at the April 13th meeting of the Warren Medical Society. The demand for attendance was so high that we have decided to offer a second session.

Thomas Kitchen, MS, BCBA, has worked with children with autism and their families as a direct-care therapist, behavior specialist, educational consultant, and curriculum specialist. Currently, he coordinates the Intensive Autism Program in the Elizabeth Lee Black School at the Barber National Institute. He also acted as Project Co-coordinator of a specialized autism training program for parents and practitioners funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kitchen serves as an adjunct faculty member in graduate programs at Mercyhurst College and The Pennsylvania State University's Autism Certificate Program, has contributed to national publications, and speaks locally and nationally on the topics of autism and behavior analysis. He holds a master's degree in Special Education, as well as a bachelor's degree in both Elementary and Special Education.
