The Unseen Dedication: A Glimpse into the Heart of Barber National Institute's Adult Day Program
Each Monday, we share stories that reflect our commitment to providing hope and opportunity to individuals and families across our communities. This post is written by Akshita Arora, a communications intern at Barber National Institute who is exploring how storytelling can connect people to our mission.
There’s a certain kind of heroism that doesn’t make headlines. It’s found in the quiet yet unwavering, persistent efforts of individuals who dedicate themselves to making a real difference, day in and day out. I had the privilege of witnessing such heroism firsthand on a community outing with Barber National Institute’s adult day program. I took note of not just the trip’s engaging and joyous nature but also the resolute dedication of staff whose work often goes unremarked.
9 AM: The Groundwork
Our day began with Courtney and Darius, two of Barber National Institute's staff members, preparing three individuals from the day program for our trip. Courtney, with just over a year at Barber, worked alongside Darius, a veteran of 15 years. The early morning routine highlighted their foresight and care: ensuring everyone had used the restroom, had their jackets, and were ready for the day ahead. The preparation was crucial, laying the foundation for an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
10 AM: Understanding the Dedication
As we drove to the mall, I learned more about the day program. It's a community-based initiative designed to offer individuals structured activities, adapting daily to their interests, whether it's arts and crafts on-site or community outings. The flexibility to tailor activities speaks volumes about the program's commitment to varied and enriching experiences.
When asked about what makes their work meaningful, the answer was unanimous: the individuals themselves. Courtney shared how they continuously bring laughter and joy to his day. He told a powerful truth about the external world:
"The community is not always receptive to them. Some people are more understanding, and some people stare at them like they aren't even human. I don’t care. As long as they’re with me, they’re going to have fun. As long as they have that one person who supports them."
Darius agreed, emphasizing the importance of providing joy and a sense of normalcy. "Others don’t know how tough they [individuals] have it. It’s not easy managing all those emotions and thoughts," he said.
Their words tell of a deeply personal commitment to being an essential source of support and positive experience for individuals.
11 AM & 12 PM: Mission in Action
At the arcade, the individuals were visibly excited to participate in the various games. They played games such as bowling, ski ball, and car racing simulators. What was most striking was the dynamic between the staff and individuals. Courtney and Darius were actively engaging rather than just supervising. They took the time to understand what each person wanted to play, patiently explaining game rules, and even participating alongside them. I noticed Courtney and Darius’ attunement to personal needs: adjusting clothes that caused sensory discomfort and providing space when individuals needed a moment away from the games.
1 PM: Visit Wrap-Up
Following the games, everyone was ready to eat. Courtney and Darius ensured every individual had a full meal in front of them before buying food for themselves. Their small, thoughtful gestures are indicative of the consistent attention given to each person’s well-being.
Reflecting on the day, I find it clear that both staff members have put in effort to create lasting relationships with the individuals. The easy conversations, jokes and teasing, shared laughs, and endearing physical gestures between staff and individuals spoke volumes about the strong bonds created over time.
As Monique, another staff member, put it, “People think that staff are just taking people out for a visit, but that’s not it. There’s a lot more that goes into these trips and making sure they go smoothly that people don’t realize.”
The day program outing was a clear demonstration of Barber National Institute’s mission in practice. It was more than an arcade visit; the trip was about fostering independence, joy, and genuine connections. The staff’s approach highlights the institute’s commitment to respecting and responding to each individual’s unique needs. It’s a testament to the quiet, consistent heroism in everyday life that truly enriches lives at Barber National Institute.
