Christmas Ball Illuminates Bayfront
The region’s most spectacular event of the holiday
season took place on Saturday, Dec. 13, when the
Annual Christmas Ball benefiting the Barber National Institute was held at the
Bayfront Convention Center.
More than 1,500 guests took part in the gala. Chair couple Joe and Rhonda Schember worked with their committees to create stunning decorations and a festive atmosphere.
The Convention Center’s Great Hall was transformed into a captivating winter scene with shimmering snowflakes suspended from the high ceilings and illuminated trees brightening the perimeter. In keeping with this year’s theme, "Through A Child’s Eyes," the stage was surrounded by giant toys that captured the magic of Christmas morning as seen by a child. The toys, some measuring more than six feet high, were designed and constructed by Frank Fecko, Director of the Barber Institute’s Fine Arts Program. Following the Ball, the decorations will be donated to the Erie County Library System for patrons to enjoy through the holiday season.
Tennessee Backporch, Erie’s premier variety band, provided music for dancing from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m.
The annual holiday gala raised more than $155,000 to support programs for the more than 3,600 children and adults with disabilities served each year by the Barber National Institute. Next year’s Ball is set for Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009!
